Self Portrait Collage

A self portrait is always a great way to capture a child's attention, after all it's an "all about me" kinda project and what little kid doesn't like that. I love the collage technique, it's great for little ones and there's a lot less sticky cleanup.
  • My green background is 9"x 12".
  • Cut out a pattern for the head and body.
  • Put out buttons, yarn, Popsicle sticks, felt, little wooden shapes, feathers etc.
  • Students must use these materials to create their self portrait (I think this is so much more fun than drawing your face).
  • Of course draw on any small details if you wish.
  • Be creative in the ways you use your materials.

Here are some more self portraits made by my kindegarten students. They used materials such as yarn, wiggle eyes, gems, popsicle sticks, wooden shapes and feathers to construct the features of their face. It is funny to see how five year olds represent themselves.

This is a great activity to get students thinking about the parts of the face they tend to forget such as eyebrows. How will you make a frowny face without your eyebrows? Eyebrows are a key component to visual emotions, they tell another person if we are happy, sad or mad, and it looks pretty funny when our eyebrows are missing!
